Spearfish Launches Urban Wood Utilization Program for Public Benefit |
Residents invited to collect free logs and woodchips from city tree removals |
The City of Spearfish has initiated its annual Urban Wood Utilization Program, offering residents free access to logs and woodchips resulting from recent tree removals on city-owned properties.
Commencing on January 5 and running through April 12, the program provides materials on a first-come, first-served basis. Residents can collect these resources daily between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. at the Bike Skills Park gravel parking lot, situated south of the Spearfish City Campground on South Canyon Street.
To participate, individuals must complete a waiver prior to collection. Waivers are available at the Spearfish Rec Center located at 122 Recreation Lane and at City Hall Parks and Recreation on the second floor of 625 N. Fifth St. during regular business hours. Participants under 18 require a parent or guardian's signature.
Participants are responsible for loading and transporting the materials. While cutting logs on-site for easier transport is permitted, activities such as splitting or carving must be conducted offsite. The city will not assist with vehicles or equipment that become stuck and is not liable for any damages incurred during the collection process.
For further information, residents can contact Parks Superintendent Rex McDonald at 605-645-3344.
In addition to the Urban Wood Utilization Program, Spearfish is hosting several community events this winter. The annual Chinook Days festival, celebrating the record-breaking temperature change of 1943, is scheduled from January 18 to 25. Festivities include a Winter Carnival at Big Hill on January 17, a Winter Luau at Killian's on January 18, and a Backcountry Film Festival at the Matthews Opera House on January 22. The event culminates with a Bonfire and Beerfest at the Lookout Amphitheater on January 24.
Additionally, the Spearfish Community Foundation has granted $30,000 to the city for the construction of a new 8,800-square-foot skate park at Spartan Park. Construction is set to begin this spring, replacing the previous facility near Spearfish High School.
Residents are also reminded to keep sidewalks clear of ice and snow during the winter months to ensure community safety.
